What is CMG on the example of Abbott Freestyle Libre 2

What is Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CMG)?

Continuous glucose monitoring is technology that makes it easier to track your blood sugar over time. Continuous glucose monitoring automatically tracks your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, throughout the day and night. You can immediately see your glucose level at any time. You can also view how your glucose changes over hours or days to see trends. Viewing your glucose levels in real time can help you make more informed decisions throughout the day about how to balance food, exercise, and medications.

How does the Continuous Glucose Monitor (CMG) work?

BMG works through a tiny sensor inserted under the skin, usually on the abdomen or arm. The sensor measures your interstitial glucose level, which is the glucose found in the fluid between cells. The sensor checks your glucose level every few minutes. The transmitter wirelessly sends information to the monitor. The monitor can be part of an insulin pump or a separate device that can be carried in a pocket or purse. Some BMGs send information directly to a smartphone or tablet, such as Abbott Freestyle Libre 2, Abbott Freestyle Libre, Dexcom G6, etc.

Features of BMG

BMG is always on and constantly monitors your glucose levels, whether you’re showering, working, exercising or sleeping. Many BMGs have special features that work with information from your glucose readings:

  1. An alarm may sound when the glucose level becomes too low or too high.
  2. You can also note your food, physical activity and medication on the BMG device, alongside your glucose level.
  3. You can download the data to your computer or smart device to see your glucose trends more easily.
  4. Some models can send information directly to a second person’s smartphone — for example, parents, partners or caregivers. For example, if a child’s glucose level drops to dangerous levels overnight, the BMG can be set to wake up the parent in the next room.

Special requirements necessary for the use of BMG

You will also need to replace the BMG sensor every 14 days, depending on the model.

To be safe, it is important to take action when the BMG high or low blood glucose alarm sounds. You must follow your treatment plan to bring your glucose into your target range or get help.

Who can use BMG?

Most people who use BMG have type 1 diabetes. Research is ongoing to see how BMG can help people with type 2 diabetes.

BMG is allowed to be used by adults and children with a doctor’s prescription. Some models can be used for children over 2 years old.

Your doctor may recommend BMG if you or your child:

  1. is on intensive insulin therapy, which is also called strict blood sugar control
  2. hypoglycemia unconsciousness
  3. often have high or low blood glucose levels

Your doctor may suggest using the BMG system all the time or just for a few days to help adjust your diabetes treatment plan.
