FreeStyle Libre is a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system from Abbott. A small sensor is applied to the back of the upper arm and measures glucose levels in interstitial fluid, sending the readings to a smartphone or a separate reader. This lets you track your sugar without routine finger pricks and make treatment decisions in time.
What the FreeStyle Libre system consists of
The system has two main parts — the sensor and the reading device.
FreeStyle Libre sensor
A small round sensor is applied to the back of the upper arm and held in place with an adhesive patch. A thin, flexible filament is inserted under the skin to measure glucose in the interstitial fluid. Setup is simple:
- Prepare the skin. Clean and degrease the application site.
- Apply the sensor. Use the applicator to attach the sensor to the skin.
- Activate. Activate the sensor via the smartphone app or the reader.
One sensor lasts up to 14–15 days (depending on the model), after which it is replaced with a new one.
How to view your readings
You can check your readings in two ways:
- Smartphone with the app — FreeStyle LibreLink is the most common option.
- Separate reader — a compact FreeStyle Libre device with a display, convenient for those who prefer not to use a smartphone (children, older users).
The devices show your current glucose level, a trend arrow, and graphs, and send alerts for high and low sugar.
