How Dexcom works
Dexcom is a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system, not a regular glucometer: the sensor automatically measures glucose levels in the interstitial fluid every few minutes and sends the data to a receiver or smartphone — no finger pricks required.
The system has three components:
- Sensor — a small device with a thin, flexible filament that attaches to the skin (abdomen or arm) and measures glucose.
- Transmitter — sends data from the sensor to the receiver or smartphone (a separate part on Dexcom G6; built directly into the sensor on G7 and ONE+).
- Receiver or smartphone app — shows your current glucose level, a trend graph, and alerts for critical values.
Dexcom lineup
- Dexcom G6 — the sensor is worn for 10 days, with a separate transmitter that lasts up to 3 months.
- Dexcom G7 — an all-in-one device (sensor + transmitter), worn for 10 days, smaller and faster to start.
- Dexcom ONE+ — a simplified version for everyday glucose control.
